4 Steps to the perfect post-yoga routine
Nothing sets the tone for a great day or turns things around like a good yoga class. But if you want to take your practice to the next level, it’s just as important to pay attention to what you do after you leave the mat.
Here are four simple things you should do after every yoga session to keep feeling your best all day long.
Savor Your Savasana at True Hot Yoga
At True Hot Yoga, we believe the most important pose of your entire practice isn’t a deep backbend or perfect headstand — it’s Savasana. This final resting pose gives your body a chance to cool down, reset, and fully absorb everything you’ve just experienced on your mat.
Savasana isn’t just about lying still — it helps lower your heart rate, calm your breathing, and balance your blood pressure. It’s also one of the best tools for sharpening focus and clearing a busy mind. When you skip out early, you’re missing out on all those benefits your body and mind worked so hard to earn.
We get it, life moves fast. Some people feel too busy to stay for a few minutes of stillness, while others find it tough to be still when their to-do list is calling. But here’s the thing: if you’re the type who feels like you don’t have time for Savasana, you probably need it the most.
Those last five minutes are an opportunity to be present, quiet the mind, and truly connect with yourself both on and off the mat. So, next time you’re in class, give yourself permission to stay. Trust us — you’ll walk out feeling stronger, calmer, and more centered than ever.
Don’t Forget to Clean Your Mat
We know the feeling: class ends, you roll up your mat, and you’re out the door. But before you head off to tackle the rest of your day, take a minute to think about what’s lingering on that mat.
No matter how spotless our studio is, your mat is a magnet for sweat, bacteria, and germs, especially after a hot, steamy session. If you’re not giving it a proper clean, you’re inviting odors, skin irritation, and germs to stick around for your next flow.
Good news: keeping your mat fresh is quick and easy. Here’s how you can do it:
DIY Soap + Water: Mix a couple of cups of water with a few drops of gentle dish soap (less is more — you don’t want a slippery mat). Wipe it down with a damp sponge, rinse well, and lay it flat to dry.
Mat Sanitizing Spray: Use a ready-made sanitizing spray and a soft cloth to wipe down your mat after every class. We keep these handy at True Hot Yoga for your convenience!
Essential Oil Mist: Create your own spray with water and a few drops of essential oil. These oils naturally fight bacteria and smell amazing, too.
Your mat works hard for you, show it a little love! A clean mat means a fresher, safer, and more enjoyable practice every time you roll it out at True Hot Yoga.
Hit the Showers
After an extra-sweaty class, like one of our signature True Hot Yoga sessions, it’s important to rinse off. When you sweat, your body releases toxins, and leaving them sitting on your skin can clog your pores and lead to breakouts or irritation. Plus, open pores mean dirt and bacteria have an easier time settling in.
Post-class, take a quick, thorough shower. Use a loofah or scrubber to gently exfoliate, clearing away sweat and buildup. Finish with a light, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin fresh and healthy. Your body worked hard — give it the refresh it deserves!
Refuel and Rehydrate
Once you’ve cooled down, it’s time to replenish. Staying hydrated is essential, especially after a hot yoga class. Skip sugary sports drinks and stick to water, or reach for coconut water for a natural electrolyte boost if you’ve had a super sweaty session.
You’ll likely be hungry too, and refueling with something light and nourishing can help keep your energy steady for the rest of the day.
These snacks also work well before class if you need a little something in your system — just keep it light. A full stomach and a hot yoga flow don’t mix well (trust us on this one).
Keep Your Zen Going
Taking care of yourself after class is just as important as what you do on your mat. By sticking around for Savasana, keeping your mat clean, rinsing off, and nourishing your body, you’ll carry that True Hot Yoga energy with you long after you leave the studio.
Try these simple habits after your next class! Your body and mind will thank you.
